Jane Ann Smith, 68, Greensburg passed away at her home on September 20, 2024.
Jane was born on January 15, 1956, in Greensburg to John William and Marilyn (Niehoff) Moeller.
Jane graduated from Greensburg High School in 1974 and earned her Bachelor of Social Work from Ball State in 1978.
She worked as a Disability Determination Supervisor for the State of Indiana for 41 years before she retired. Jane was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greensburg.
Jane was the oldest of seven children where she took on the role of mentor, supervisor, and babysitter. Thus, the nickname “General Jane”. She was a staunch advocate for her family, friends, and anyone that needed a boost. She worried about others and their situations, even at the detriment of herself. She was self-deprecating with a great sense of humor. Her physical self wasn’t the definition of strong or imposing, but her spirit and internal resolve took a back seat to no one.
She loved her family and went to the ends of the earth to be a mother. She was rewarded with her beautiful daughter, Lauren and later her sweet granddaughter, Riley, with whom she had a special bond. She loved to dance and was in her own realm when she did. Especially when “Smoke on the Water” was playing. More than anything, she knew what was most important. She had such a positive impact on others, while battling multiple health afflictions throughout her life. She was the perfect combination of tough, sensitive, and caring; and will forever be missed.
Jane was married to Mike Smith on October 4, 1980, and he survives.
Other survivors include her daughter; Lauren (Reuben) McCracken, two grandchildren; Riley Williams, Karter McCracken, her mother; Marilyn Moeller, and six siblings; Karen (Jerome) Buening, Diane (Jeff) Burns, Nancy (Mike) Ernstes, Jan (Ed) Haskamp, John David (Anita) Moeller, and Marsha (Randy) Proffitt.
Jane was preceded in death by her father; John William “Johnny Bill” Moeller.
A rosary will be prayed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Thursday, September 26 at 8:30 am. Visitation will follow at the church from 9-11 am. A Funeral Mass will start at 11am immediately after visitation at the church with Father Bill Ehalt officiating.
Donations in memory of Jane can be made to Anew Hospice through the funeral home. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Anew Hospice for their caring and compassion throughout their time with Jane.
