Susan Ann Hoffman, 73, of Osgood, Indiana passed away September 19, 2023. She was born on June 24, 1950, in Indianapolis, Indiana to Ruth Ralston Stegemiller and Herbert W. Stegemiller. Susan was a 1968 graduate of Southport High School, obtained her Bachelor’s from Ball State in 1972, and went on to earn her Master’s degree in Education from Indiana University in 1974. After graduating from Ball State in 1972, Susan moved to Greensburg, Indiana to begin teaching seventh grade English and Literature at Greensburg Junior High School. She married Charles Hoffman on June 8th, 1974. After a 31-year teaching career, she retired in 2012 and moved to Osgood, Indiana.
Susan was a prolific reader, often reading one book per day. She enjoyed gardening, antiquing, flea marketing, garage sales, birdwatching and spending time with her friends, family and pets. She was a talented musician who played cello, guitar and piano. Throughout her life, she was a member of the Indianapolis Youth Orchestra, the Greensburg Library Board and a local gardening committee. Susan was a compassionate and empathetic animal lover who rescued countless animals including a raccoon, screech owlets, squirrels, cats, ducks and her cherished dog, Adele. Susan was a beloved wife, mother, sister, daughter, friend, teacher and grammarian.
Susan is survived by her husband, Charles Hoffman of Osgood, Indiana; son, Tom Hoffman of Lake Santee, Indiana; son, Karl Hoffman of Austin, Texas; daughter, Margaret Hoffman of Greensburg, Indiana; cat, Genny of Osgood, Indiana; sisters Mary Pendelton (Mike) of Orlando, Florida; Ruthie Magary (Mike) of Indianapolis, Indiana; Lisa Peake (Gordon) of Tucson, Arizonia; Priscilla Lawler (Ed) of Michiana, Michigan; and brothers Mathew Stegemiller (Jane) of Indianapolis, Indiana and Any Stegemiller (Lyn) of North Liberty, Indiana.
Susan was preceded in death by her mother, Ruth Ralston Stegemiller; her father, Herbert W. Stegemiller; and her beloved dog, Adele. There will be no public visitation or funeral. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Susan’s name to the Greensburg Public Library, the Decatur County Animal Shelter, or the Greensburg Community Schools Education Foundation.
