Senate Bill 176 moves on – addresses nurses shortage

Sen. Shelli Yoder Statement on Senate Bill 176 Passing the Senate

INDIANAPOLIS – Today, the Indiana Senate advanced Senate Bill 176, legislation authored by Sen. Shelli Yoder (D-Bloomington), aimed at addressing Indiana’s critical nursing shortage. The bill creates opportunities for high school students to earn credits toward a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) program, giving them a head start on entering the health care workforce.

“This legislation is a bold, forward-thinking solution to one of Indiana’s most pressing workforce challenges,” Yoder said. “By allowing high school students to earn credits toward an LPN program, we’re not only opening doors to rewarding careers but also ensuring Hoosiers in every corner of the state have access to quality care.”

Yoder emphasized the broader significance of the bill, which strengthens the health care system while investing in the future of Indiana students.

“This bill not only addresses a growing crisis in health care but offers students a life-changing opportunity to launch their careers early, build brighter futures and make an immediate impact on their communities,” Yoder said. “It’s the kind of solution Hoosiers deserve, and I’m proud to champion it.”

Senate Bill 176 now moves to the Indiana House of Representatives for consideration.
