PUBLIC NOTICE
From: Justin Speer, Chairperson
Decatur County Firemen’s Association
Date: September 18, 2024
Subject: Burn Ban Implemented by Decatur County Commissioners
Attention Residents of Decatur County:
Effective today, September 18, 2024, the Decatur County Commissioners have implemented a burn ban due
to ongoing dry conditions and heightened fire risk. This ban is crucial for the protection of personal property
and standing crops in our community and will remain in effect until further notice.
Key Points Regarding Fire Dangers:
-Dry Conditions: Recent lack of rainfall has significantly dried out vegetation, making it highly susceptible to
ignition.
- High Winds: Increased wind speeds can rapidly spread any flames, posing a serious threat to homes and
farmland. - Low Humidity: Lower humidity levels contribute to the rapid drying of fuels, increasing the likelihood of fire
ignition. - Protection of Standing Crops: The ban aims to safeguard vital agricultural resources that are essential for
our community.
Important Details: - All open burning of any type, including recreational fires, campfires, fire pits, and the burning of yard waste,
is strictly prohibited. - Fines for violations could be $200 per occurrence, with a maximum total of $1,000, plus applicable court
fees.
This notice by the Decatur County Commissioners is pursuant to Indiana Code 10-14-3-29.
We appreciate your cooperation in ensuring the safety of our community and protecting our agricultural
resources. For updates and additional information, please refer to the Decatur County EMA’s social media
channels.
Thank you for your understanding.
