On June 1, 2026, at approximately 3:21 p.m., the Decatur County Communications
Center (DCCM) received several calls regarding a motor vehicle accident on Interstate
74, eastbound, near the 138.5 mile-marker. Deputies Robert Goodfellow and Devin
Workman responded to the scene.
Upon arrival, Deputies discovered two pickup trucks, one of which was hauling a camper
trailer, in the median. The camper trailer had overturned onto its side, and traffic was at
a complete standstill.
Following the investigation, it was determined that vehicle 1, driven by Dereck McDaniel
of Cincinnati, Ohio, was traveling in the left lane and drifted into the right lane. Vehicle
2, driven by Darrell Mills of Kentucky and pulling a camper trailer, was forced from the
right lane into the emergency lane. Vehicle 1 then struck the camper trailer, causing
vehicle 2 and the trailer to spin into the lanes of travel and trap vehicle 1 between
vehicle 2 and the camper trailer.
All three vehicles entered the median and struck the cable barrier, where the camper
trailer overturned.
Mr. Mills was extricated from his vehicle by the Greensburg Fire Department and
Decatur County EMS. He was transported to the Decatur County Memorial Hospital and
later flown to IU Methodist Hospital. His condition is currently unknown.
Mr. McDaniel exited his vehicle on his own and was transported to the Decatur County
Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. He was later released.
As a result of the traffic backup caused by the initial crash, two secondary accidents also occurred.
A semi-truck and trailer driven by Jonathan Burkman of Milford, Ohio, was stopped in
traffic near the 136 mile-marker in the right lane when a pickup truck driven by Isaac
Siedling of Brookville, Indiana, struck the rear of the semi-trailer at a high rate of speed.
The impact caused the cab of the pickup truck to separate from the frame with Mr.
Siedling still inside. The crash is believed to have been caused by driver distraction and
failure to observe stopped traffic in time.
While responding to the secondary crash, two emergency vehicles made contact,
resulting in one first responder sustaining minor injuries requiring stitches.
At approximately 7:20 p.m., Interstate 74 was reopened for normal travel.
Sheriff Bill Meyerrose would like to thank all assisting agencies and organizations,
including Decatur County Communications, Greensburg Fire Department, TDS Towing, Platinum Towing, Tim’s Wrecker, Indiana Excise Police, Indiana State Police, Decatur County EMS, Decatur County Memorial Hospital, and Lifeline for their assistance during these incidents.
