Safe Streets and Roads for ALL- Future 3 Safety Study Open House- 5/8/25

On Thursday evening an open house was held at City Hall to provide information and to allow the public to ask questions about the study and why Decatur County and the City of Greensburg is participating.

“Help shape a safer future for Rush, Decatur, and Henry Counties! We’re creating the Future 3 Safety Action Plan- a collaborative, data-driven effort to eliminate serious and fatal crashes for everyone who drives, walks, rolls, or bikes.” was posted on the City of Greensburg’s Instagram Account.

The study is to address and investigate safety concerns on Indiana 3 between I-70 and US421. The city of Rushville secured a $788,000 grant to begin the process to create a plan and since that time New Castle, Henry County, Rushville, Rush County, Decatur County, and the City of Greensburg have contributed funding and became part of the conversation.

“This study is essential for identifying ways to improve safety on Indiana 3. We’ve seen several accidents on Indiana 3 in recent years—accidents that could be prevented, and if we have the ability to do so, we must.” said Decatur County Commissioner Jeremy Pasel. “We’ve seen a rise in semi-truck and commercial traffic on this road, which is already heavily used by personal vehicles and Amish buggies. It’s our responsibility to develop a plan that will reduce the number of accidents. I’m grateful that Decatur County is collaborating with nearby cities and counties to make this happen. Once the study is complete, we will take that information back to INDOT and help create a plan to work on identified needs”

Once the study is complete it could suggest changes such as a new roadway for commercial traffic, changes to traffic flow on Ind 3, or a master plan of several changes that would make travel safer. When the study is complete the team of counties and cities will then take those findings and go back to the INDOT and present their findings to come up with a solution.

“We have partnered with Decatur County government, Rushville and Rush County, Henry County and New Castle to explore short term and long-term safety improvements along State Road 3 from I70 to US421 in Greensburg as part of a grant received to create a Public Safety Action Plan. This study is a way for us to find options that could make this important corridor safer for our neighbors. I value the opportunity that federal funds have made for our communities to take the first step in corridor improvements and better understand the most dangerous stretches of road in our counties and cities. These investments of resources and time is vital to safety and I’m glad to be a part of that. Part of the duties of the mayor is to seek funding, seek partners, seek solutions and work to bring those plans to life.” said Mayor Joshua Marsh.
