As the holidays approach, some people use store-bought artificial Christmas trees that can be packed away into a box after the season ends. Others, however, prefer a fresh tree and the opportunity to select the perfect pine for their home from a tree farm. Here’s a list of tree farms around the region for those seeking their dream tree!
DECATUR COUNTY:
Bohman Christmas Tree Farm
Bohman opened their doors in 1976, after planting their first trees in 1968. They provide a classic “choose and cut” tree experience – bring your family, friends or even your dog – and take a wagon ride through the rolling hills to hand pick your ideal tree. Trees available for the “choose and cut” experience are all marked with price tags. Once you’ve chosen the tree, you can saw it and Bohman will bring you and the tree back to the farm and prepare the tree for a smooth trip to your home. Preparation entails mechanically shaking the tree to remove loose needles and debris, cutting and drilling it for the stand and running it through a bailer to condense the branches. Pre-cut trees are also available for those who don’t want to or can’t venture into the field. Bohman’s also sells tree stands and tree bags for easy clean-up when the holidays are done!
Looking for more than a tree? Bohman’s also sells handmade wreaths, both plain or custom-decorated, plus pine rope garland. Pine rope garland and wreaths are only available while supplies last. T-shirts and sweatshirts are available so you can commemorate your visit to the farm each year, as well as other gift items. While you’re visiting, you may even see Santa! Don’t forget to grab a cup of warm cider, hot cocoa or coffee, some popcorn to go with it and snap a family photo at the sleigh before you leave!

Birch Island Farm
Birch Island Farm, owned by Rick and Andrea Lux, was started in 2010 when the family purchased some land for a small farm in Shelby County. The Luxes grow corn, soybeans and have kept a small herd of cattle over the years but started growing Christmas trees as a means to make a sustainable living off of the small acreage. Within three months of deciding to start a tree farm, they’d planted their first 1,200 trees. The name Birch Island is a nod to Andrea’s Latvian heritage, according to the Birch Island Farm website – birch trees are abundant in Latvia and important to the nation’s culture, and Andrea is a first generation Latvian-American. The farm’s logo has elements of Latvian design and color.
“This is our American dream,” the Birch Island Farm about page, written by Andrea Lux, states, “a blending of my family and our traditions here, where Rick’s family settled and he grew up. An homage to making our own traditions but honoring our heritage. We certainly look forward to becoming part of your family’s holiday traditions, and growing together.”

Hilgert Christmas Tree Farm
Hilgert Christmas Tree Farm is a self-serve choose and cut farm specializing in Scotch Pine trees between four and six feet tall. They’re open from 8 AM to 5:30 PM, seven days a week during the holiday season. They will open for the season on November 29 and will be open Thanksgiving weekend. Closing day is December 20. Genth Tree Farm
Started in 1965 by Noel and Kathryn Genth, Genth Tree Farm sold its first Christmas tree in 1972. After Noel’s death in 1978, Gene and Benita Genth took the reins at the farm, which continued operating until 2003. Fifteen years later, in 2018 after some planning, Ryan and Lori Genth and Ben and Erin Wagner planted roughly 1,400 trees, with an additional 1,200 planted in 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023. The farm specializes in White and Scotch pines, as well as Norway Spruce and Canaan Fir trees. For 2024, they will be supplementing the operation with pre-cut fir trees until they can grow enough of their own trees to meet demand.
