New Law eliminates fees on electric bikes

New law eliminates fees on electric bikes

Recently, I joined Gov. Mike Braun at the Statehouse, where he ceremonially signed into law a bill I co-authored to eliminate fees on electric bikes.

House Enrolled Act 1380 exempts e-bikes and lightweight electric vehicles from the electric vehicle supplemental fee, which is annual fee paid by electric vehicle owners in lieu of paying the gas tax. This fee makes sense for large electric vehicles using our roads but less so for recreational e-bikes.

Previously, this supplemental fee was costing Hoosiers more than 10% of an e-bike’s total price. After working with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, it was clear that this fee placed an unfair burden on Hoosiers choosing affordable, environmentally friendly transportation. This new law ensures that small electric vehicle owners are not disproportionately impacted by high fees while continuing to support responsible and sustainable funding for our roads.

This new law received strong bipartisan support in the General Assembly and I’m glad to see this common-sense measure become law.To view a full list of new laws signed by the governor this session, click here.
