Harold Leon Hughes, 86, of Osgood, passed away at 7:55 p.m. on Sunday, December 12, 2021. He was born on September 16, 1935 in Ripley County, the son of Alvin D. and Verna (Hull) Hughes. He was a lifelong resident of Ripley County. Harold was a farmer and also dug graves for Union Flat Cemetery and Hopewell Cemetery. He was a member of the Power of the Past and the Westport Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon. He enjoyed boating and the outdoors. He had served with the Army National Guard. He married Janet Tower on June 3, 1960 in Westport and she survives. Other survivors include his daughter, Teresa (Steve) Ruggles of Greensburg; his sisters, Opal LaBolt and Mollie Toops both of Holton; his grandsons, Zacheriah Ruggles (Ali Wilson) of Greensburg and Trent Ruggles (Micheala Schroeder) of Osgood; his great grandchildren, Briztol Ruggles, Augustus Woodson, Harper Ruggles and Hoyt Ruggles. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Harry Hughes. The funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 15, 2021 at the Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport with Pastor Malvin McCullough officiating. Burial will follow at the Westport Cemetery. A time of visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 15, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at Noon.
