Governor’s Workforce Cabinet recognizes Ivy Tech’s 11-month Cyber Academy

Ivy Tech Community College Columbus was among 22 recipients of this year’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) Awards. Recognized for its Cyber Academy based in Jennings County, the Columbus campus was one of three award recipients in the Postsecondary Programs of Study category.

Ivy Tech’s Cyber Academy is an accelerated program based at Muscatatuck Urban Training Center in Butlerville and offers students a 2-year associate degree in just 11 months. While pursuing their degree, students become eligible for industry-recognized certifications that are often required for high-paying careers in the cyber security field.

Students are continuing to be accepted for the next Cyber Academy cohort which begins in August.

“Career and technical education are a vital part of Indiana’s talent development system and provides students opportunities to gain the skills necessary for in-demand, high-wage careers,” said Tony Harl, State Director of Career and Technical Education for the GWC. “The Awards for Excellence program provides an opportunity to shine a spotlight on students excelling in CTE and the instructors, employer partners, counselors and others who make these experiences possible.”

All nominees were evaluated on a set of identified criteria following nominations from CTE directors, instructors, postsecondary representatives and other stakeholders across Indiana. Criteria for student award winners include earning credentials, dual credits and participating in work-based learning through their CTE programs. This year’s event was facilitated in partnership with the Indiana Association of Career and Technical Education (IACTE).

“Our students are finding the program to be extremely rewarding,” said Dr. Jackie Fischer, vice chancellor for Academic Affairs at Ivy Tech Columbus. “Our graduates are finding well-paying careers in the field. Some are even being offered jobs before they graduate.”

“The demand for well-educated and well-trained individuals in this field is continuing to grow,” said Pam Schmelz, Department Chair for the School of Information Technology. “Companies across many spectrums such as banking, healthcare, education or manufacturing are in need of people who can protect their computer infrastructures.”
