Combining light angel food cake, a creamy vanilla base, and sweet strawberry layers, this dessert is perfect for family gatherings, potlucks, or a cool weekend treat. It’s incredibly simple to put together and always a hit!
📋 Prep Time & Yield
- Prep time: 20 minutes (plus chilling time)
- Pan Size: 13 x 9-inch cake pan
- Servings: 12–15 servings
🛒 Ingredients
The Base & Cream Layer:
- 1 angel food cake
- 1 big box vanilla pudding
- 2 cups milk
- ½ pint vanilla ice cream
The Strawberry Layer & Topping:
- 1 big box strawberry Jell-O
- 2 cups boiling water
- 1 box frozen sweetened strawberries
- 1 package Cool Whip
🥣 Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Cake Base
- Take a 13 x 9-inch cake pan.
- Tear or cut your angel food cake into bite-sized chunks.
- Line the bottom of the pan evenly with the cake chunks.
Step 2: Mix & Chill the Cream Layer
- In a large bowl, combine the big box of vanilla pudding, 2 cups of milk, and ½ pint of vanilla ice cream.
- Mix thoroughly until smooth and completely blended.
- Pour the mixture evenly over the angel food cake chunks in your pan.
- Place the pan in the refrigerator to allow the pudding layer to set.
Step 3: Add the Strawberry Layer
- In another large bowl, dissolve the big box of strawberry Jell-O in 2 cups of boiling water.
- Stir the box of frozen sweetened strawberries directly into the hot Jell-O (the frozen fruit helps cool the gelatin down quickly!).
- Carefully pour this strawberry mixture evenly over the chilled pudding layer.
- Place the pan back into the refrigerator and leave it until the Jell-O is completely set.
Step 4: Top and Serve!
- Just before serving, spread 1 package of Cool Whip evenly over the top of the firm strawberry layer.
- Slice, serve cold, and enjoy!
💡 WTRE Kitchen Tips:
- The Quick-Set Secret: Using frozen strawberries is a fantastic old-school shortcut. They instantly drop the temperature of the boiling Jell-O water, meaning less waiting time for you before it goes onto the cake.
- Perfect for Making Ahead: This is an excellent dessert to assemble the evening before a gathering, giving all the layers plenty of time to lock in their flavor and texture.
